BTS broke another world record. It only took them seventeen hours to do so.
The record-breaker is “IDOL,” the new single off of BTS’ latest album Love Yourself: Answer, released on August 24th. “IDOL” showcases the seven members of the Korean boyband embracing their Korean roots and ‘idol’ status in a way contrary to what people demand or expect of them. The song shot straight to number one on the iTunes World Chart and six major Koreanmusic charts.
The music video for “IDOL” passed 43.3 million views in seventeen hours, beating the previous record-holder “Look What You Made Me Do” by Taylor Swift, which attracted 43.2 million views in seven more. “IDOL” is now the most viewed music video in 24 hours; “IDOL” is also the third most viewed video overall in the same amount of time, trailing behind “Chewbacca Mask Lady.
For BTS, the world record has been months in the making, even if the execution only took less than a day. BTS fans, called ARMY, attempted to break the world record with BTS’ “FAKE LOVE” back in May but fell short of the 43.2 million views required. “FAKE LOVE” clocked in with around 35.9 million views at the end of its 24 hours. With the addition of “IDOL,” “FAKE LOVE” slides to number five in the music video category and number ten for the most watched videos in 24 hours overall.
Part of the reason the record was so satisfying for ARMY was because of their previous shortcomings; the other part was made up by their love for BTS. For both “FAKE LOVE” and “IDOL” ARMY set a goal to rack up 50 million views in the first 24 hours for the music videos. With ARMY’s second attempt, they blew the comeback goal out of the water; the final count for “IDOL” read 56.2 million on the platform’s view counter, more than 20 million views ahead of “FAKE LOVE’s” final tally. YouTube has certified the official count after unofficial views were deleted as 45 million, solidifying BTS’ record.
ARMY trended multiple hashtags worldwide on Twitter to celebrate Love Yourself: Answer’s release and the success of “IDOL,” including #IDOL50M, #AnswerIsHere, #AnswerNow, and #ARMYPijamaParty.
