BTS scored at the Teen Choice Awards, winning both of their nominations and taking home the surfboards for the Choice International Artist and Choice Fandom categories. These are the second and third to make their way into the BTS legacy; the first was the International Artist award from 2017, making this the second consecutive year that BTS has won the International Artist category.
The Teen Choice Awards is an annual award show hosted by FOX celebrating momentous pieces in “music, film, sports, television, [and] fashion.” Winners are given customized surfboards as trophies. The Teen Choice Awards caters towards and generally represents the mainstream interests of teenagers thirteen years of age or older. The show was hosted in The Forum in Los Angeles County on August 12th.
Teen Choice Award winners are determined by fan votes, yet ultimately, producers for the show have the final say in who takes home the title. Voting for both the Choice International Artist category and the Choice Fandom category was open for voting on the Teen Choice website and on Twitter. Voters must be located in the fifty United States, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, or Puerto Rico and must be at least thirteen for their vote to count.
ARMY came during in the last hours of the voting period to make their voices heard. True to their own repertoire, ARMY utilized Twitter to further their own agenda. The top three worldwide trends on the evening of the award show were #TeenChoice, #ChoiceFandom, and #ARMY, the last trend pulling in more than 3.25 million tweets, more than half of #TeenChoice, which garnered 6.36 million uses on its own.
Based on the comparison, it’s safe to suggest that a substantial percentage of those using the top two trends were BTS fans.
BTS did not attend the award show and ARMY accepted the Choice Fandom award on their behalf. BTS was announced as the Choice International Artist during the announcement of the Choice Fandom winner. BTS won the Teen Choice Warner category, a separate voting for the Warner Channel, moving their total wins over the weekend up to three.
The Korean band won against Black Pink, CNCO, Exo, Got7 and Super Junior in the Choice International Artist category and won Choice Fandom over Taylor Swift (Swifities), Black Pink (Blinks), CNCO (CNCOwners), One Direction (Directioners) and Fifth Harmony (Harmonizers).
Big Hit Entertainment tweeted an article detailing the achievements at the Teen Choice Awards.
BTS’s world tour kicks off August 25th, the day after their newest album, Love Yourself: Answer, is released and concludes their Love Yourself series.
The next Teen Choice Awards ceremony will be held sometime in 2019.
