Love Yourself: Tear collects a million sales on Gaon, Hanteo charts

Love Yourself: Tear has proven once again that, in Korea, the biggest names in music call themselves BTS.

Love Yourself: Tear has officially been certified for selling a million units on the Gaon chart. The album, released on May 18th, accomplished the feat in only 53 days and became the first album to reach the million unit landmark on the chart. Love Yourself: Tear’s reign over the Gaon chart is not without companionship. The album, like its predecessor Love Yourself: Her, holds over one million pure sales on the Hanteo chart in addition to its Gaon record. The two BTS releases are the only releases on the Hanteo chart who climbed their way to their staggering million unit sale numbers without any album repackaging, hence their ‘pure million sales’ titles.

Though both Hanteo Information System and Gaon Music Chart are major music market charting systems, they differ in their ways of tracking. Hanteo is a real-time chart. Hanteo affiliated stores report their physical album sales to Hanteo each day and the collective number of album sales from the Hanteo affiliated stores determines their Hanteo charting. The chart is a decent estimate of how many albums have been sold.

Gaon, unlike Hanteo, counts individual sales. While Hanteo only tracks sales from their stores, Gaon also tracks other store shipments, store restock shipments, individual platform sales, and so on and so forth.

What does this mean for BTS?

Hanteo counted Love Yourself: Tear’s sales at 1,227,173 units sold. The world now knows that BTS sold over one million units and their achievement was forever, permanently recorded on one of Korea’s most important music charts. Love Yourself: Tear is the highest selling album in Hanteo history—and in a day and age where fewer people are buying albums, the pull that BTS has, to sell a million units in less then two months, is astronomical.

Gaon records Love Yourself: Tear’s sales at 1,750,117 units sold.

In terms of Western chart comparison, Gaon is more like Billboard than Hanteo is. In the west, the Billboard chart is the biggest judge out there--and when faced with the challenge, BTS did not falter. Love Yourself: Tear debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, the first K-pop act to do so, and Love Yourself: Tear became the highest-charting album by an Asian act in the process. Some of the biggest names in Western music (Shawn Mendes, Taylor Swift, Camila Cabello, and Jay-Z) all debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 in their own recent releases. BTS joins that list of Western powerhouses with Love Yourself: Tear.

In comparison to its successor, Love Yourself: Her is certified with over a million sales on Hanteo but not on Gaon. Instead, it checks in on the Gaon chart with a cool 215,448 units sold. Nevertheless, its popularity remains strong. Love Yourself: Her and with ten other BTS releases snagged eleven of the top 50 spots on Gaon’s Album Chart for June.

Rumors of a repackaging for Love Yourself: Tear and/or the entire Love Yourself series hint that a repackaging might be coming out in August. Repackages count towards album sales on the Hanteo and Gaon charts, meaning any repackaging of Love Yourself: Tear would contribute to its overall sales. But in terms of repackaging in order to reach the million sale mark—something every million-seller on Hanteo has previously needed to reach that tier—there’s no need.

Love Yourself: Tear is already there.
